Korean Grammar Guide: Directional Particle (으)로 & Question Words

Understanding how to express direction and ask questions is crucial for effective Korean communication. Today, we’ll explore the directional particle (으)로 and Korean question words (의문사). These grammar points are essential for daily conversations and navigation in Korean.


Part 1: (으)로 – Directional Particle

Basic Concept

The particle (으)로 is used to indicate direction, means, or method. It’s similar to “to,” “toward,” “by,” or “with” in English, depending on the context.

Formation Rules

  1. After consonants:
  • Add 으로
  • 학교 → 학교로
  • 집 → 집으로
  1. After vowels:
  • Add 로
  • 서울 → 서울로
  • 회사 → 회사로

Various Uses

1. Direction

  • 학교로 가다 (go to school)
  • 왼쪽으로 가세요 (go to the left)
  • 북쪽으로 가다 (go north)

2. Means/Method

  • 버스로 가다 (go by bus)
  • 연필로 쓰다 (write with a pencil)

1. 누구 (Who)

  • 언제부터 언제까지예요? (From when to when?)

5. 왜 (Why)

  • 왜 늦었어요? (Why were you late?)
  • 왜 한국어를 공부해요? (Why do you study Korean?)
  • 왜 그렇게 생각해요? (Why do you think so?)

6. 어떻게 (How)

  • 어떻게 가요? (How do you go?)
  • 어떻게 만들어요? (How do you make it?)
  • 어떻게 생각해요? (What do you think?)

7. 얼마 (How much/many)

  • 얼마예요? (How much is it?)
  • 얼마나 걸려요? (How long does it take?)
  • 얼마나 멀어요? (How far is it?)

Question Word Patterns

1. With Particles

  • 누구 + 가/이: 누가
  • 무엇 + 을/를: 무엇을/뭘
  • 어디 + 에서: 어디서
  • 얼마 + 나: 얼마나

2. Common Combinations

  • 언제부터
  • 어디까지
  • 무엇으로

Practical Examples

Using (으)로

1. Transportation

  • 지하철로 갈 거예요. (I’ll go by subway)
