Korean Grammar: Using ‘을/를’

What are ‘을’ and ‘를’?
‘을’ and ‘를’ are object markers used to indicate the direct object of a verb in a sentence. The choice between ‘을’ and ‘를’ depends on whether the preceding noun ends with a final consonant (받침) or not.
- Use ‘을’ when the noun has a final consonant.
- Use ‘를’ when the noun does not have a final consonant.
Examples
- Using ‘을’
- 비빔밥을 먹어요. (bipimbap-eul meogeoyo) – I eat bipimbap.
- 책을 읽어요. (chaek-eul ilgeoyo) – I read a book.
- Using ‘를’
- 친구를 만나요. (chingu-reul mannayo) – I meet a friend.
- 영화를 봐요. (yeonghwa-reul bwahyo) – I watch a movie.
Colloquial Usage
In spoken Korean, ‘을’ and ‘를’ are often omitted. For example:
- “밥 먹어요.” (bap meogeoyo) – I eat rice.
- “옷 입어요.” (ot ibeoyo) – I wear clothes.
